Brain Tumor is one of the most aggressive diseases with a two-years survival rate of only about 32% and a five-years survival rate of about 5%. The median survival of a brain tumor patient remains dismal with current standard of care (Resection, Radiotherapy combined with Temozolomide). Furthermore, today's medicine does not target the cancer-initiating cells (CIC), also known as cancer stem cells (CSC), that are the resistant origin of the growth and recurrence of the tumor. Stemergie's CIC based technology platform allows the identification, validation and development of treatments against these CIC. Stemergie's proprietary technology mainly consists in a methodology to identify and enrich CIC without the use of any marker, and the ability to keep these primary cells long-term stable. Furthermore, Stemergie owns a unique collection of primary brain CIC (biobank) and an in vitro screening assay. Stemergie aims at translating this technology to further oncology indications in the near future.
Based on this technology platform, Stemergie identified, patented and validated new molecular targets and molecules that specifically target brain CIC. These new treatments may significantly increase the survival of brain tumor patients and might be applicable for further tumor indications in the future as well. Stemergie is furthermore in the process of validating metabolic, genetic and proteomic biomarkers for brain CIC with the aim to develop companion diagnostics in the future.
